Risks exposed in rapid growth of branded social media

Yesterday, Proofpoint research released the first instalment of an on-going, three-part report series uncovering social media usage and infrastructure within businesses.

Focusing on Fortune 100 companies, the report reveals the rapid expansion of social media — 80 percent in the past three years — yielding the explosive generation of brand-owned social media accounts, and billions of brand related user interactions.

Of this onslaught of new engagement, according to the report, 30 percent of corporate social publishing is managed through organisations' management tools, thus leaving the majority at risk of account hacking, not to mention public blunders, with direct publishing bypassing compliance workflows.

“Social media channels have quickly grown to rival email as a preferred communications medium,” Devin Redmond, vice president and general manager of Nexgate for Proofpoint, commented to the press. “The first step in protecting those channels is understanding that infrastructure, and quickly discovering, inventorying, and persistently tracking the accounts and tools a company owns. Once that foundation is in place, the necessary step of eliminating security threats and compliance risks becomes possible.”

In the forthcoming parts two and three of the year-long study, Proofpoint will explore a detailed analysis of related security threats and compliance risks.
