Strengths: Very flexible policy options
Weaknesses: Slightly difficult to configure
Verdict: Impressive policy management, but needs to simplify configuration
StillSecure's Safe Access is a complete NAC appliance that stops unauthorised access, prevents malicious endpoint activity and enforces compliance. It provides agentless, agent-based and Active X-based protection, along with several enforcement methods, including 802.1X, DHCP, VPN and endpoint-based. This allows for solid flexibility to work within any network infrastructure.
It was a fairly straightforward install. Once we connected to the network, we were able to access the web-based setup wizard, which configures general network and licence information. After that, all configuration and management are done from the web-based GUI. This GUI is easy and intuitive to use, but there is a lot of manual configuration to be done to get the appliance set up. We would have liked to see a wizard that would assist in the configuration steps.
Safe Access features a highly flexible policy engine that comes preloaded with three policies. These high, medium and low security policies provide an easy way to get started in assigning various policy groups. Windows- and Mac-based endpoints are supported, but Safe Access also provides quarantining and management of unsupported operating systems.
A PDF installation guide and separate user guide are provided on CD. This also contains a short quick-start guide that includes some basic deployment and installation information. The installation guide illustrates the initial installation of the appliance software, as well as upgrade instructions. It covers the entire appliance from setup through to advanced configuration and management. Both guides were well organised and easy to follow, with many screenshots and step-by-step instructions.
StillSecure provides standard telephone and email support, Monday to Friday. Customers can buy a premium support plan for 24/7/365 technical support.* There is a small support area on the web, which includes FAQs, updates and a resource library.
At a price of £12 per IP for a 2,500-user deployment, this can be quite expensive, but it does provide a lot of flexibility and functionality for the price.
