Sophos has announced the launch of the next version of the Astaro Security Gateway to add application control via a next generation firewall), an authentication agent and interactive web reporting.

Following the acquisition of the unified threat management company earlier this year, Sophos said that the new features and enhancements of Astaro Security Gateway version 8.2 improve network performance, while providing increased visibility and control over the network.

The application control feature improves network visibility, blocks unwanted applications and empowers IT administrators to prioritise bandwidth usage according to Sophos, while the enhanced interactive web reporting tool provides administrators with a superior user experience tailored to showcase information in a way they expect to see it.

Finally the authentication agent allows administrators to authenticate users by name instead of IP address to allow for increased control over access in profiles and to make reports easier to read.

Jan Hichert, senior vice president of network security at Sophos, said: “As technology changes, so too must the tools organisations use to control their networks. With version 8.2 we once again ensure our customers can face current and future network and security challenges by offering the next generation of firewall technology, application control.”

Sophos also said that the flagship unified threat management solution now includes a technical preview of Astaro's upcoming log management product that is integrated into the Astaro Security Gateway and is available for all users to try for free.
