Sunbelt Software has announced upgrades to its VIPRE product line for enterprises and consumers.

Following the launch of the VIPRE Enterprise anti-malware solution last April, it has introduced a management console, client agent and optional premium edition that includes an advanced firewall protection.

It claimed that the new releases offer comprehensive endpoint protection for small, medium and large enterprises, and are part of a significant technology platform upgrade to all of the company's endpoint security products.

The VIPRE Enterprise 4.0 management console delivers extensive new functionality to support large enterprises and managed service providers, and allows them to control medium and large-scale infrastructures with multiple offices and locations.

Further improvements include improved support for removable drives; enhanced support for 64-bit environments, including a 64-bit boot cleaner and 64-bit rootkit scanner; and support for Mozilla Firefox Scan Extensions.

The premium edition combines VIPRE's anti-virus and anti-spyware protection, and adds desktop firewall, malicious website filtering, IDS (Intrusion Detection System), HIPS (Host Intrusion Prevention) and other powerful features into a single agent.

Sunbelt Software product manager Curt Larson said: “We found last year was the worst year on record for malware and this year is set to outstrip that. No matter how good the detections are, some will get through but how do you cut down? It is not just infections, it is how to extricate financial information – and preventing it from getting on the box is critical.”

Larson also described the improvements to the MX-Virtualisation (MX-V) technology, which analyses malware in real-time in a secured memory ‘lock box' that emulates Windows. He said: “This is part of the detection methodology, and is basically investigating the properties of the file itself. We let the file run on the fake OS and if it acts like a piece of malware we can detect it.

“We do not plan to do much with the cloud base of MX-V, as the solution can be smaller and things can be blocked up. This was in version 3.1 but we did not promote it, and it is a technical advantage.”

The company also announced similar upgrades to its CounterSpy product. CounterSpy 4.0 offers consumers the same comprehensive spyware and malware protection and many of the same under-the-hood enhancements as the VIPRE anti-virus 4.0, while a new management console and multi-site tiering model in CounterSpy Enterprise 4.0 is the same as that found in VIPRE Enterprise 4.0.

Alex Eckelberry, CEO of Sunbelt Software, said: “Many vendors have added layer upon layer of capabilities onto already bloated, outdated anti-malware engines in a flawed attempt to catch up.

“When we released VIPRE, we took a different approach, building a new product entirely on new proprietary next-generation technology. Now, we've taken that same technology to the next level with the release of our 4.0 platform, which delivers strong, comprehensive malware protection and continues the performance standard we established with VIPRE.”
