SonicWall has launched a new range of next-generation firewalls to offer up to 30Gbps of application control and intrusion prevention.

According to the company, the SuperMassive E10000 Series consists of three solutions, features a scalable multi-core architecture that utilises up to 96 cores of processing power, and utilises SonicWall's reassembly-free deep packet inspection (RFDPI) engine to scan every byte of every packet with full content inspection of the entire stream, while providing high performance and low latency.

In January, SonicWall president and CEO Matt Medeiros told SC Magazine that last year it had launched a 10GB deep packet inspection engine, but 'wait until you see what we introduce this year'. He said: “Today at SonicWall, 50 per cent of bandwidth traffic is video, while 25 per cent is voice, data is not the main traffic in the network and things can only get worse.

“There is a need for 10-100GB capabilities without opening up any vulnerabilities. You should stop trying to stop everything, let's enable everything but not compromise security.”

The SuperMassive E10100 is the first in the series, featuring 12 processing cores, with 12 additional cores in integrated high availability mode. The E10200 utilises 24 processing cores and delivers 7.5Gbps of application control and IPS. The E10400 is powered by 48 processing cores, offering 15Gbps of application control and IPS. The E10800 is the flagship model of the series, featuring 96 cores for maximum performance and throughput.

SonicWall SuperMassive E10100 will be delivered in the second quarter of this year, while SuperMassive E10200, E10400 and E10800 will be delivered in the third quarter of 2011.

Greg Young, research vice president at Gartner, said: “We believe that today, less than one per cent of corporate networks are secured using next-generation firewalls. We expect that by 2014, 35 per cent of all enterprises will have installed a next-generation firewall with tightly integrated intrusion prevention and application visibility and control capabilities.”

John Gmuender, vice president of engineering and CTO at SonicWall, said: “SuperMassive makes next-generation security a reality for even the largest and highest performance networks, delivering full application control and content security that eliminates threats entering the network.
