Symantec has announced the public beta launch of version 12 of its endpoint protection technology.

Symantec has announced the public beta launch of version 12 of its endpoint protection technology.

Claiming that Symantec Endpoint Protection 12 is designed to detect and block sophisticated new threats earlier and more accurately than before, Symantec said that it is built for speed and effectiveness in virtual environments.

It also leverages the Insight technology, previously called Ubiquity, to block new and unknown threats.

According to the company, Symantec Endpoint Protection Small Business Edition 12, also now available for public beta, will offer small organisations with limited IT staff and resources a solution they can deploy to start protecting their businesses. The new versions are scheduled to be generally available later this year for purchase through Symantec's worldwide network of value-added authorised resellers, distributors and systems integrators or directly. The beta program was previously only available via invitation but it is now open to the public and interested parties may sign up here.

Seth Shestack, associate director of information security at Temple University in the US, said: “I'm interested in virtualising more of my environments, but security must continue to function effectively without causing unacceptable slowdowns. Symantec Endpoint Protection 12 in a virtual environment is demonstrating a high level of performance without sacrificing the security of my virtual machines.”

Francis deSouza, senior vice president of the enterprise security group at Symantec, said: “With the right protection, virtual environments can be as secure, or even more secure, than traditional infrastructure as a result of increased standardisation, visibility, automation and control available in high-density environments. Symantec Endpoint Protection defends against all types of attacks and is optimised for performance on VMware View and VMware vSphere.”
