Trend Micro Data Loss Prevention
Strengths: Many server deployment options and preloaded templates
Weaknesses: Agent deployment could be better integrated
Verdict: Trend Micro traditionally has been a favourite of ours but this solution could do with a smoother deployment process
Trend Micro Data Loss Prevention consists of two parts. The first is the management server that provides central control and enforcement of policy. This is available in several forms including a hardware, software or virtual appliance. The second is the endpoint software that maintains communication with the policy server and enforces the policy on the endpoint itself.
This product also uses Trend Micro's DataDNA fingerprinting, which allows data to be solidly secured while at rest, in motion or in use.
Installation is completed in two phases. The first is installing the appliance itself. Once we downloaded and burned the appliance ISO file to CD we put it in our test server. The system sits on top of Red Hat Enterprise Server so the installation wizard felt very comfortable and easy to follow. Once the appliance was installed we were able to access the web-based management console for additional configuration.
The second part of installation is deploying the agents, which can be done in several ways. We found the easiest was creating an installation package using Microsoft System Center Configuration Manager. Once the agents were deployed and the server was running we were able to start creating policies.
We found the management interface to be easy to navigate and well organised. Configuring policies was quite simple and the system comes preloaded with many compliance-based templates already in place and ready to go.
Documentation provided includes an installation guide that provides steps for installing and configuring both the server and the endpoint agents. An administrator guide details using the console and system functions. Both guides include many screenshots, step-by-step instructions and examples.
Trend Micro offers both free and premium support options. Included with the purchase of the product is phone support and access to online case submission. Premium offers 24/7 phone support and a technical account manager.* There is also a large support area on the website available to customers at no cost with a knowledgebase, as well as many other resources.
At a price starting at £15 per user we find the DLP system to be good value for almost any size environment. It has a good amount of flexibility, with an easy-to-use format.
