The US Federal Trade Commission has issued new guidance on how websites should collect, save and share information about users.

The new guidance recommends that websites tell consumers that data is being collected during their searches, and allow them to opt out. It also instructed mobile companies and internet service providers to inform customers about data collection and allow users to decline.

The FTC's assistant director in the division of privacy and identity protection, Jessica Rich, said: “You may have a contract with your ISP and everywhere you go, they can be collecting information on you.”
