Webroot has announced its decision to turn its back on signature-based anti-virus and detect completely in the cloud.
Webroot said consumer product SecureAnywhere has the fastest, lightest and least-demanding protection as users are able to manage security for all of their PCs, tablets and mobile devices from a single web portal and with a single licence.
Talking to SC Magazine, Brian Czarny, vice-president of product marketing at Webroot, said this was a "whole new approach to protecting users online" as the current solutions "are really addressing yesterday's problems".
“They do not protect users as well as they should, as security is now signature-based and analysts look at the threat and push out protection. We need to look at it in a different way, so it is on your terms regardless of your device or what you are doing. A holistic approach is needed on how to protect and what you are doing, whether it is on a PC or a mobile device. So we are launching this for the consumer now and we will go to businesses in a few months,” he said.
At the heart of SecureAnywhere is an anti-malware engine that focuses on a file's behaviour in the cloud. Czarny said: “Often security software can slow down devices, and when you a run a scan that is all you can do. Our approach is to make this only 580k on the desktop, with a scan that takes less than five minutes. We call this the ‘learning' scan, as the following scans will be only two minutes.
“This takes the hassle out of the scan and compares with other files in the cloud and sees if anything has changed. We are still about cloud-based anti-virus and pretty much everything is in the cloud, but you can do an offline version that will detect anything that tries to execute.”
Webroot said SecureAnywhere's Identity Shield defeats advanced zero-day keyloggers, screen grabbers and Trojans, while the Web Threat Shield blocks phishing attacks and exploits by analysing web content before the browser executes it. Finally, the Core System Shield ensures that system structures have not been modified and all components are functioning properly, applying repairs if needed.
Czarny said the business edition will have "some differences in the experience and with more granular controls in the portal”.
