The organiser of today's "National Work From Home Day" says UK bosses should enable their employees to work remotely this summer.
With 70 days until the London Olympics begin, research by the Trade Union Congress has found that 3.8 million people now work from home, an increase of 25.4 per cent in the past decade.
The TUC estimated that up to six million more people are expected to need to travel in connection with the Olympics, so many employees may have no choice but to change their working patterns. It called on employers to trial new working practices now, such as flexi-time, remote working and working from home.
As part of Work Wise UK's National Work From Home Day, the research found that around one in five employees who are never able to work from home would like to do so. But it said that despite the technological advances, too many employers are still reluctant to trust their workers enough to give it a try.
Brendan Barber, general secretary of the TUC, said: “The Olympics are an ideal opportunity for more employers to try out innovative flexible working practices such as flexi-time and home working. There is a huge demand from staff for more flexible working practices but too often they are held back by out-of-date attitudes and a lack of trust from bosses.
“With just 70 days left until the opening ceremony, employers still have time to plan smarter working practices, but there is now a sense of urgency.”
