Yahoo! and eBay are joining forces to tackle phishing scams targeting PayPal users.

From today, the online auctioning site and its subsidiary PayPal will use Yahoo!’s DomainKeys authentication technology to block phishing messages that pose as eBay and PayPal emails.

The technology works by verifying the domain of each email sender, allowing internet service providers to block malicious emails, according to Yahoo!

“Today is a significant milestone for the added protection of millions of eBay and PayPal customers,” said Dave Cullinane, chief information security officer at eBay in a statement.

Michael Barrett, chief information security officer at PayPal, added: “While there is no silver bullet for solving problems of phishing and identity theft, today’s announcement is great news for our customers who rely on Yahoo! Mail.”

The technology upgrade will be rolled out globally over the next few weeks to Yahoo! email users.
